How to release emotions that are stuck in your body

Did you know that we hold our emotions in our bodies? While it may seem like enough to process things only on a mental level, there are far more powerful ways to let go of stuck feelings in our systems. Here are some of my favorite ways to release stuck emotions in the body:

  • Move: dancing, walking, jumping, yoga, or any other form of movement are all powerful releases.

  • Cry: let yourself feel your feelings. Give yourself some privacy and allow yourself to cry without judgment.

  • Laugh: let yourself laugh like you did when you were a kid. Put on hilarious videos that you know make you crack up, and allow yourself to laugh without containment.

  • Scream: if possible, find a safe and private space to let yourself feel any anger that may be within you. If you need to scream into a pillow, that works perfectly as well. The point is to let yourself feel your emotions without judgment and let them be released.

  • Write: let yourself write without filtering yourself. Don’t worry about your handwriting, grammar, or being a “good” writer. Just let your mind release whatever is coming up — without judgment. You can throw the paper out after for a deeper feeling of release.

Letting go of these stuck emotions is extremely powerful. You may feel an energetic release immediately after, or notice that you are less reactive in stressful situations. Emotions build upon each other, so releasing them reduces the load on your system and gives your nervous system a well-deserved break.
